Citizen's Alert

Monday, 28 December 2009 21:12 by Betty Cauler

My neighbors and I were the victims of a hit-and-run auto accident last night and I wanted to put out a description of the vehicle in case anyone sees it around town. We live in the 2200 block of Tilghman Street in Allentown. Both my neighbor and his wife's cars were struck by a dark red SUV, possibly a Chevy, boxy like a Jeep or a Land Rover and possibly with a black roof or a black luggage rack. After striking the vehicles, the SUV careened onto the sidewalk and ran over two trees in my front yard before coming to a stop. I saw the SUV for about two seconds while it was stopped on the sidewalk with its lights off before the driver fled the scene east on Tilghman to the traffic light, then south on 22nd Street.

The SUV will have extensive front end damage on the passenger side, including the loss of the side mirror, and will have made a high-pitched squealing sound from the damage to the wheel assembly. If you see this vehicle please call the Allentown Police at 610-437-7751. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Silent Night, Holy Night

Thursday, 24 December 2009 22:36 by Betty Cauler

Merry Christmas greetings from Tilghman Street!

On this Christmas Eve remember the truth of this mystical night, that God became man in the person of a child to save us from our sins, a peace offering to all mankind.

May your Christmas be filled with wonder and joy and your New Year with hope.

Christmas Cookie Day 2009

Tuesday, 22 December 2009 19:43 by Betty Cauler

The weekend snowstorm cookie-baking marathon yielded lots of lovely kiffles like these.

Some ground rules, though, should be set up before the next marathon as follows:

1. Don't drink wine while you're baking cookies.

2. Look at pictures of cookies on the internet. Nothing like discovering an easier method to roll out kiffle dough using squares instead of circles.

3. Use a plastic sandwich baggie to meter out kiffle fillings. You're hands stay clean and you get a nice uniform glop on each square.

4. Take time out to laugh and enjoy the falling snow.

The Legacy of Jeff Korba

Saturday, 19 December 2009 14:28 by Betty Cauler
Looking for a great last-minute Christmas gift for someone special? How about the first film documentary DVD by former Channel 69 News assignment editor Bill Crumlic? "On Point: The Legacy of Jeff Korba" tells the inspiring story of one young man's lasting impact on the world around him. Hunterdon County, NJ, native Jeff Korba, an accomplished professional musician, positive change agent and all around nice guy, touched so many lives with his "kharma incarnate," yet his own life was tragically cut short in a 2007 car accident. Korba's legacy lives on through the uplifting influence he had on everyone he met. You will cry at the end and wish that you had been fortunate enough to know this extraordinary young man.

You can purchase DVDs and learn more about Jeff Korba at  crumlicnews.com and onpointfilm.com or read the Hunterdon County Democrat feature story. And watch for the story in the December 21 Easton Express-Times and Hunterdon County edition.

Night Snow

Saturday, 5 December 2009 17:45 by Betty Cauler

I love the sight of snow falling between the power lines outside my home. The street lights give a nice warm glow (actually it's a horrible sodium-vapor orange that you can never quite filter out in Photoshop). But even so, the scene makes for interesting photographs.

I hope you are all staying safe, sane and uncluttered as Christmas approaches. Nothing is worth being in that much of a hurry.

The Living Hope Presbyterian Church in Wescosville is staging "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" tonight (Dec. 5) at 7 p.m. with all donations to go to the Allentown Rescue Mission. Check it out if you are looking for something to do. Lots of talented kids in this one.

The snow reminded me of this winter picture from my childhood home in Cedar Hollow showing our '56 Chevy wagon and another classic model.
